IMPACT VIRGINIA YOUTH MISSION TRIP
Our Youth and chaperones will travel to Bluefield College on Sunday, June 27th and return on July 2nd where they will work with other youth from IMPACT Virginia. They will be building porches and ramps, roofing, sanding and painting. Please remember our group as they minister to others. Support our youth mission team by:
1. Writing a special note of support to each team member on an “Encouragram” (blank notes are located on the Narthex table or you may use your own). Give completed notes to Ruth Anne Collins before the group leaves at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.
2. Participate in the prayer send-off on Sunday morning, June 27th, at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
3. Keep the team in your prayers for the duration of their trip.
Our team members are: Trey Collins, Mary Catherine Collins, Grayce Darden, Hayley Darden, Brooke Darden, Claire Downing, Eric Ozbun, Abby Ozbun, Marissa Smith, Logan Turner. Chaperones are: Ruth Anne Collins and Craig McCoy
CHURCH WIDE MISSION PROJECT
During the month of August, we will be helping our local elementary schools by collecting boxes of tissues. Two years ago when we did this, we collected 125 boxes. Let’s see if we can help top that number this year. This will be fun for us and so very helpful to our teachers. There will be a big blue collection box in the Narthex for your convenience.

COMPASS POINTS
How is your prayer life? Through the years would you say that you have grown in your prayer life? Or would your response be “hot” or “cold” – that at times you feel close to the Lord and at times He seems far away and unconcerned about your life?
The sermons this summer are going to focus upon prayer. We will talk about some dimensions of and consider some ways that we can grow in our prayer life. But I realize from the outset that our problem is really not so much what we know about prayer but rather what we do about prayer.
In Sunday School and in sermons through the years we have talked much about prayer. What I hope we can all do this summer is to not focus so much upon the dimension of knowledge, but can all grow in how we pray. All of the great experiences in the Christian church have been under girded with prayer. It too is the secret to our future.
As you read this newsletter our youth will be preparing for IMPACT Virginia in Bluefield, and later this summer Catie, Mara, and Sasha will be going to South Africa. Pray for these youth as they participate in these mission projects.
Your Pastor, Dennis
SPOTLIGHT ON EDUCATION
At this writing VBS 2010 has just begun, and Galactic Blast is off to a great start. Abby Ozbun, and Hayley and Brooke Darden registered the children and assigned them into three age-appropriate groups: Moon Walkers, Space Cadets, and Jedi Knights. Group leaders are Harry Philpott; Phyllis Abbott; and Abby, Hayley, and Brooke. Craig is teaching “Moon Tunes,” with me helping on piano as needed.
Discovery Time is led by “scientist” Harry Philpott; Susan Sapp, Bill Sapp, Gary Darden, and Marsha Garren are making Cosmic Crafts; Rocket Rec and Astro Bistro (games and snack) are hosted by Dennis and Sylvia Knight, Brenda and Joe Hundley, Eric and Cheryl Nowlin, and Eric Ozbun. Bible Story teachers are Angilee Downing (aka “Princess Leia”) and John Collins (aka “Hans Solo”). And once again, Judy Szulecki wraps things up each night during our closing Reflection Time. I’m serving as Principal. Further details will follow in the September newsletter.
The fellowship hall was decorated by Craig, Harry, Kristi Kallam, me, and primarily Susan Sapp. Many, many thank to all the time and effort you’ve invested in this year’s school. Only God knows the seeds that will be planted this week.

News from Women on Mission—July and August
Our meeting in July will be held on July 6 (Tuesday morning) at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. This is a change from the 5th because of the holiday. We will be making cross necklaces for upcoming mission trips and addressing cards to our WMU homebound members. All ladies are encouraged to join with us for a great time together. Group 3 will be enjoying an evening out (July 6) at Forest Park. If you would like to join them for the evening, please contact Phyllis Abbott. During July our Mission Project is helping the Hospice organization in our area.
On August 2nd, we will have our regular meeting beginning at 10:00 a.m. Ladies, you don’t want to miss this meeting because John Fulcher will be sharing with us about “Our Baptist Heritage.” We will meet in the Mary Kirk class room. In August we will be sharing in a Mission Outreach Project by collecting school supplies for Anchor Home.
Mission Trip to South Africa
Sasha Doss, Mara Doss, and Catie McCoy leave on August 2nd for Johannesburg, South Africa. This mission team will be focusing on the ministry at Door of Hope, caring for babies and the staff that works with them. Thanks again for everyone who helped support this trip financially. Do keep these young ladies and the rest of the team in your prayers as they are sharing the love of Christ in Johannesburg.
LIBRARY DRIFTS
Most students are out of school for a summer break, and many college students are in their second month of vacation. The weather is hot, muggy, or stormy. On television, reruns of the shows from the previous season are the only shows available. Of course, you know what this means—time for summer reading! The recommended reading lists for most schools are online. These lists are extensive which allows for flexibility in finding books to suit your interests. Support for the summer reading program is one of the major projects for the Sue M. McCabe Library Committee. During the months of summer, the members of the Library Committee will display books from the local schools’ reading lists on the cart that we place in the narthex each Sunday morning. Also you are encouraged to stop by the library and select books to read. On the cart and in the library rooms, you will have access to our recently acquired and processed books. Students, bring in your recommended reading lists to the Sue M. McCabe Library.
